From the Heart: Why Hands for Healing Equine Exists

By Suzanne MacPhail, Founder & Director

After nearly three decades as a licensed mental health counselor serving families across the North Shore of Massachusetts, I’ve seen up close what trauma, grief, anxiety, and loss can do to a person — and how few places exist that offer something truly different.

Hands for Healing Equine is my answer to that gap.

Based in Topsfield, MA, we are a nonprofit equine-assisted learning center founded in 2025 with a simple yet powerful mission: to create a compassionate community where healing, connection, and growth are nurtured through the bonds among humans, animals, and nature.

Horses Have Always Known

My relationship with horses began at nine years old, during my parents’ divorce. Even then, I felt something that I couldn’t fully articulate — a kind of calm attentiveness from these animals that made it easier to breathe, easier to just be. That experience stayed with me through 45 years as an equestrian and 28 years in mental health practice.

When I discovered the PATH model of equine-assisted work in 2009, something clicked. I finally had a framework for what I’d always known intuitively: horses offer a quality of feedback that traditional therapeutic settings simply cannot replicate.

As prey animals, horses are exquisitely attuned to human emotion and intention. They read body language, breathing patterns, muscle tension, and emotional regulation in real time — and they respond honestly. That honesty creates a safe space where people can be vulnerable in ways they often can’t manage in a conventional office setting.

Who We Serve

Hands for Healing Equine is built for the people in our community who are carrying something heavy: veterans, parents, families navigating loss, individuals struggling with anxiety or trauma. Our programs — held at our East Street property in Topsfield — include:

  • Structured support groups

  • Equine-Assisted Learning experiences for individuals and families

  • Veteran education programs

  • Continuing education events for mental health professionals

  • Family healing programs

  • A quiet space for those who simply need to grieve in a calm, understanding environment

We serve Topsfield, Essex, and the broader North Shore Massachusetts community.

What Success Looks Like

In our first year, success isn’t about numbers. It’s about people leaving our programs with greater confidence, emotional awareness, and resilience — with practical tools for managing stress and a renewed sense of hope and belonging.

At the heart of everything are the horses, donkeys, and other equine partners who make this work possible. Through guided sessions or simply quiet time with the herd, participants begin to release emotional burdens and rebuild trust — in themselves and in others.

We are just getting started, and we hope Hands for Healing Equine becomes a lasting place of restoration for North Shore families and beyond.
