Sophie

Doctora de la Pampa, Selección Nacional de Polo

Sophie is a 20-year-old Argentine thoroughbred who came to Hands for Healing Equine two and a half years ago after a full career as a polo pony. In Argentina — where polo is less a sport than a national inheritance — ponies like Sophie are bred and trained from a young age for a game that demands everything at once: speed, agility, stamina, and a nervous system that stays quiet while the world around her does not. The calm you feel when you stand next to her is not incidental. It was built, hoofbeat by hoofbeat, on the fields of the pampas.

She carries that composure into her work now. Sophie is excellent with adults, children, and groups alike, and has been partnering in equine-assisted learning sessions for two years. Thoroughbreds at twenty can be many things; Sophie is steady, athletic, and fully present — a horse whose focus you can feel the moment you enter her space.

Out in the paddock, she is often alongside her friend Liam, either soaking up the sun or breaking into a run just to show you she still can. She is, in every sense, happy.

If there is a lesson in Sophie, it is that a life of discipline does not have to harden you. It can also, quietly, prepare you to support a friend in need.
